Dividend

A payment made to shareholders out of a company's profits after corporation tax. Company directors often take a small salary plus dividends, because dividends carry no National Insurance. Dividends can only be paid from actual profits, and the tax-free dividend allowance has been cut sharply in recent years, narrowing the advantage.
