How this works
We start from a UK population-average life expectancy (83 for women and 79 for men) and then apply broad adjustments for a few lifestyle factors:
- Smoking. Subtract 10 years if you currently smoke or have smoked regularly.
- Exercise. None: −3, light: −1, moderate: no change, active: +3.
- BMI category. Underweight: −2, overweight: −1, obese: −5, normal: no change.
The resulting figure is your estimated life expectancy (never lower than your current age). We then subtract the assumed State Pension age of 67 to show roughly how many years your savings may need to last beyond it.
Assumptions
- The base figures (83 / 79) are rough UK population averages and not personalised.
- The lifestyle adjustments are deliberate simplifications and do not reflect any specific medical model.
- The State Pension age is assumed to be a flat 67, which may differ for your date of birth.
- Many factors that affect life expectancy, such as family history, health conditions and occupation, are not captured here.
